Hi, I'm Jamie, I am one of the founders of the Austin Parrot Society, and I work in Disaster Management most of the year and am a seasonal with the IRS. I got my first parrot after moving to the USA. Back in the UK where I grew up, I did a lot of native bird rehabbing with almost a 100% successful release rate. Now I live my life filled with parrots!
I am a board member for Wings of Love Bird Haven and love being able to go up there and work with the rescue birds. I have found that helping a rescue bird learn that humans are good and can be trusted is one of the most rewarding things I can do. To facilitate this I am working on becoming a parrot behaviorist, and am very lucky to have Barbara Heidenreich with Good Bird Inc. as my mentor. When I have a problem training I always think WWBD (What Would Barbara Do?) LOL!
I like to take my disaster work a little further and work with a number of groups such as Emergency Animal Rescue Services and Code 3 Associates who provide rescue and sheltering services to animals affected by disasters like hurricanes and puppy mills. Recently I have been working with a number of local and national resources assisting in busting the many puppy mills that are in the USA. I also love to work with individuals to help them develop an all inclusive disaster plan/kit which covers human and animal members of their family.
My current flock is:
Marnie - Opinionated Congo African Grey.
Lucha - Grumpy old man Lilac Crowned Amazon
Darwin - Loving Greencheek Conure
Ndeke - Single and loving it Slate Peachfaced Lovebird
Puff - Congo African Grey I am rehabbing for Wings of Love
I also have a strong interest in reptiles and have four leopard geckos
and a corn snake, all of which are rescues.
Finally there is Mina my ex puppy mill breeder dachshund
Thank you for your interest in the Austin Parrot Society, and I hope to see you at a future meeting!
Sincerely,
Jamie Powell
